Pack Walk 101: How to Organize a Fun & Successful Group Dog Walk

(Updated Oct. 2026)

Have you ever been to a Pack Walk? Or maybe you've heard of one but aren't quite sure what it's all about?

A pack walk is simply a group of dogs and their humans coming together for a walk or hike. Think of it as a social outing for dog lovers, with plenty of fresh air, exercise, and quality time with our Beesties!

Pack walks are a wonderful way to connect with fellow dog parents, explore new places, and practice good walking habits in a group setting. And the best part? Your pup doesn't have to be a social butterfly to participate. With the right environment, preparation, and a little personal space, many different types of dogs can enjoy the experience.

Whether you're looking to join your first pack walk or organize one of your own, we've put together a few tips to help you and your Beestie hit the trail with confidence.

Why Pack Walks Are Great for Dogs (and Humans!)

Dogs may be social animals, but just like us humans, they have their own personalities, preferences, and comfort levels around others. Some love making new furry friends, while others are perfectly happy minding their own business.

That's one of the things we love about pack walks. Unlike a dog park or an off-leash playdate, a well-organized pack walk allows dogs to share an experience without the pressure of having to interact directly.

Here are a few reasons we love them:

  • Build confidence: Walking alongside other dogs at a comfortable distance can help some pups become more accustomed to new environments and distractions.

  • Practice good leash manners: Pack walks offer opportunities to reinforce loose-leash walking, focus, and other everyday skills.

  • Get moving: Fresh air, exercise, and plenty of new sights and smells make for great physical and mental enrichment.

  • Strengthen your bond: Exploring the world together and practicing positive behaviors can help build trust between you and your Beestie.

  • Find your people: Let's not forget the humans! Pack walks are a fun way to meet other dog lovers, swap stories, and build community.

Of course, every dog is different. Some may find large groups overwhelming, particularly if they're fearful or reactive around other dogs. Starting with a smaller group or working with a qualified, reward-based trainer can help you determine whether a pack walk is a good fit.

Remember, the goal isn't for every dog to become best friends. Sometimes, simply enjoying a peaceful walk in the company of others is a win!

How to Organize a Pack Walk

Whether you're gathering a few friends and their pups or bringing together dog lovers from your neighborhood, hosting a pack walk doesn't have to be complicated.

Here are a few simple steps to get started:

  1. Pick a date and time. Consider the season, weather, and temperature. Morning walks are often a good choice during warmer months.

  2. Choose a dog-friendly route. Look for a trail, park, or neighborhood route that allows leashed dogs. Consider the distance, terrain, shade, accessibility, and whether there's enough room for dogs to walk comfortably apart. Avoid narrow or crowded trails if you're expecting a larger group.

  3. Establish a meeting spot. Choose an easy-to-find location with enough space for everyone to gather without crowding the dogs. Share a map or route ahead of time, along with parking and restroom information if available.

  4. Spread the word. Share your pack walk details about 2–3 weeks in advance. Include the date, meeting time, location, approximate distance, difficulty level, and any guidelines for participating. Ask attendees to RSVP so you have an idea of your group size.

  5. Send a friendly reminder. A couple of days before the walk, confirm the details, share weather updates, and remind everyone of the group's walking etiquette and what to bring.

  6. Get your pack together! On the day of the walk, arrive early to greet participants and check everyone in. Give dogs plenty of room to settle before setting off. Name tags for humans and pups are always a fun touch!

A little extra tip: If you're organizing a larger group, consider having a friend help lead or bring up the rear so no one gets left behind. It's also helpful to plan a few rest stops along the way.

What to Bring on a Pack Walk

A little preparation goes a long way toward making your adventure comfortable and enjoyable for everyone.

Here's our go-to pack walk checklist:

  • A sturdy leash: A 4ft Funston Leash is great for keeping your Beestie close in busier areas or on narrow trails. A 6ft leash offers a little more freedom when there's room to spread out.

  • A comfortable, secure harness or collar: Make sure your pup's walking gear fits properly before heading out.

  • Poop bags: Always pick up after your Beestie and pack out waste to keep our shared outdoor spaces clean.

  • Treats + a treat pouch: Reward your pup for checking in, walking calmly, and making good choices along the way. Our Alamo Treat Pouch keeps the goodies within easy reach.

  • Water + a portable bowl: Hydration is important for both humans and dogs, especially on longer or warmer walks.

  • Weather-appropriate gear: Comfortable walking shoes, layers, sun protection, and a rain jacket if needed.

  • A charged phone: Handy for navigation, photos, and keeping in touch with the group.

And don't forget to check the weather before heading out. Hot pavement, extreme temperatures, or unexpected storms can turn a fun outing into an uncomfortable one for our furry friends.

Pack Walk Etiquette: A Few Friendly Reminders

A successful pack walk isn't about having every dog walking perfectly in formation. It's about creating a relaxed, positive experience where everyone feels welcome and safe.

A few simple guidelines can help make that happen:

  • Keep dogs leashed. Unless your group is specifically organizing an off-leash activity in a designated area, everyone should remain on leash. Retractable leashes are best avoided in group settings.

  • Respect personal space. Not every dog wants to say hello, and that's perfectly okay! Avoid forced greetings and give each pup enough room to walk comfortably.

  • Ask before approaching. Always check with another dog parent before allowing your Beestie to approach theirs.

  • Pay attention to body language. Watch for signs that your dog may be uncomfortable, such as stiff posture, excessive panting, freezing, or repeatedly trying to move away. It's okay to create more distance or take a break.

  • Let everyone find their pace. Some dogs are comfortable near the front, while others prefer extra space at the back or along the sides. Let owners choose what works best for their pups.

  • Be considerate of others on the trail. Share the path with fellow hikers, cyclists, and other dogs, and always follow local leash and trail regulations.

  • Keep it positive! Reward good behavior, be patient with one another, and remember that this is supposed to be FUN!

And one last thing: if your dog isn't having a great time, there's no shame in calling it a day. Every outing is a learning experience!

A Little Pack Walk Inspiration

Our friends, dog mom Lauren and her Lab mix, Boomi, helped organize Wildebeest's very first Pack Walk in the Bay Area a few years ago and shared why they loved bringing the community together.

"The best thing about organizing a pack walk is meeting so many new people in your area that you may not have. It's so different talking to people online vs real life. I always leave a pack walk feeling so high from having a great walk and meeting amazing dog parents in the community. For first time organizers, try to at least say hi to everyone who is there. Introduce yourself, and thank them for coming!"

We couldn't agree more! There's something special about connecting with people who share your love for dogs, especially when it involves getting outside and exploring together.

How to Find a Pack Walk Near You

Not quite ready to host your own? No worries! There are plenty of ways to find a pack walk in your community.

Start by checking local dog groups on Facebook, Instagram, Meetup, or neighborhood community platforms. Local pet businesses, dog trainers, and dog-friendly organizations may also organize group walks and share upcoming events on their social channels.

You can also search for terms like "dog pack walk" or "group dog walk" along with your city or neighborhood.

Before signing up, it's always a good idea to ask about the group size, walking pace, leash requirements, and whether the event is suitable for your dog's temperament and comfort level.

And if you're in the San Francisco Bay Area, keep an eye on Wildebeest for upcoming community events and Pack Walks. We'd love to see you and your Beestie out there!
